'Dead Man's Chest' sets BVIG record

BERLIN -- "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" set a new opening-day record for Buena Vista Intl. Germany, after attracting more than 600,000 admissions on Thursday.

Pic was released on 1,300 copies, BVI's biggest release here.

While exhibs expect a boffo perf from the film, many had worried that the record July temperatures could keep moviegoers out of cinemas.

Fox's "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" holds the record for best summer start in Germany. Pic sold more than 700,000 admissions on its opening day in May last year.
