Hello and welcome to the first edition of our new-fangled Trailerama column, where you can watch the latest movie trailers and indulge us as we analyze, deconstruct and make predictions based on 2.5 minutes of sound and vision. Everybody likes watching the previews, and here they're the feature presentation as well! Let's jump right in with Superman Returns, Casino Royale and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Release Date: July 7th, 2006
Director: Gore Verbinski
Cast: Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Stellan Skarsgård, Bill Nighy, Jack Davenport, Kevin R. McNally, Jonathan Pryce.
The Trailer: The teaser gave us just enough information to leave us wanting more, and now the trailer fills in the gaps of the plot of the second Pirates adventure. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is a marked man, cursed by Davy Jones, a pirate whose entire crew looks to have the ability to transform into various sea creatures. Jack enlists the help of Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and once again sets a course for the high seas. Depp, of course, has some funny moments in the trailer, Bloom looks like he still can't figure out how he got to be a movie star and Keira looks as beautiful as ever. It's a big-budget, large-scale, swashbuckling adventure movie, one that's a welcome addition to a somewhat lackluster summer movie season.
Our Prediction: Pirates of the Caribbean was something of a surprise, a rousing and enjoyable summer movie that came out of nowhere and made a zillion dollars. It made a superstar out of the lovely Keira Knightley and introduced the world to a "hot new talent" named Johnny Depp (the mainstream public didn't seem to realize that he'd been working - and delivering excellent performances - for 20 years prior). Pirates sailed mostly due to Depp, and Disney seems to realize this, ending the trailer with the proud proclamation, "Captain Jack is Back." Indeed, Depp's Jack Sparrow was an amazing creation, but now that we know the character and all his bizarre quirks, will he be enough to carry a second adventure? Dead Man's Chest looks to be bigger and louder than its predecessor in every department, but will it contain the surprises - and unpredictable lead performance - that made the original such a delight? Probably. Disney has a creative goldmine here if they play their cards right.
